The Humanistic Values in European Art and Science

In the global development trend of technology and life sciences, and medicine, the collaboration between art and science has become a forward-looking trend in the development of contemporary art , and has appeared in a large number of international new media art exhibitions, residency programmes and art institutions in recent years. The European Union also sees contemporary thinking as a priority, and has invested heavily in exhibitions and research programmes. The Netherlands is an important country in the development of research and creation in this field. Therefore, this project attempts to explore the expression of humanistic values in the global contemporary art trend of "art and science", starting from the curriculum planning and development of higher education, museums and art institutions in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, observing and interviewing the theoretical development and practice of related organisations and institutions on "art and science", and taking "bio-art", which which is a lesser-visited field in Taiwan, as the main research area, to investigate the expression of humanistic values in the development of bio-art.

Cross-disciplinary issues are important concepts in the development of contemporary art. Since the early 20th century, modernism has broken down the barriers between disciplines, and the emancipation of artistic perspectives has led to the fusion of different media and forms of expression. Following the Industrial Revolution, scientific research and the rapid development of technological media have also influenced artists' choice of media and the way they use them. In the history of Western art, the development of media art, new media art, and "art and science" has demonstrated the ability of contemporary art to reflect deeply on the high level of technological development. Looking back at the development of domestic cultural policies and artistic creation, the CICC made "digital art" a key policy in its "Challenge 2008: National Development Priority Plan (2002-2007)" due to the development and output value of information technology in the country. After nearly two decades of focused development and promotion, a local development network has been formed. In recent years, in response to the global development of digital art performances and cultural and creative industries, major universities and colleges have established departments or courses in new media art, technological art, and digital content under the terms of "digital content" or "cultural creativity" in order to build a bridge between humanities and artistic thinking and technological technology. Taiwan's development in the fields of life science, biotechnology, and medical technology industries is ranked among the most advanced in Asia. May I ask if we can elevate technological "technology" to the level of "scientific" thinking, and further apply it to scientific research through the pursuit and exploration of humanistic values through artistic creations? Through the lens of art, we will explore the boundaries between reason and sensibility, and examine the nature of truth, faith and the meaning of life.

The project will visit relevant research institutes, museums and art institutions in the Netherlands and the UK, using the "Art and Science Exchange" project and the "Centre for Art and Genetics" of Prof. Zwijnenberg at the University of Leiden as a theoretical research base, and the Waag Society for Science, Technology and Society, the V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media, and the FACT Liverpool as the reference for the implementation of the project. Leiden University has a long history of research in art and science, and the relevant programme at the Institute of Art History is open to graduate students in biomedical sciences, with the visual arts as the basis of the programme's research, and the weighting of research areas for students from different fields. It is expected that this project will serve as a reference for domestic research in the fields of art, science, and bio-art through a report of relevant observations and interviews.
